In this case the bad news is that there are more and more ransomware attacks coming in more ways than ever before. At an average cost of more than $4.5 million per attack, this is bad news at a whole new level.
Clever cybercriminals now go beyond your data storage and, in 95% of attacks, they attempt to destroy your backups. Not only are they attacking users with phishing and other social engineering, they’re digging down deep to take over accounts, including admin accounts, completely. They’re developing new attack vectors including API’s, Microsoft Powershell, Microsoft 365 email rules, web access interfaces, and more. They’re pushing out malicious PDFs, Microsoft Office files, binaries, compressed archives, and even the occasional oddity such as a Java archive (JAR), Visual Basic Script (VBS), or JavaScript directly attached to emails.
